What Exactly Is Liposuction?

You might benefit from liposuction if you have localized pockets of stubborn fat on the body that have not decreased despite dieting and workout programs. This surgical procedure can eliminate the undesired fat and recontour the treated areas so that they are slimmer and smoother.

Liposuction is most often used to sculpt the chin and neck, abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, calves, and upper arms but can be done on most parts of the body.

Dr. Wasim Sheikh has extensive expertise performing liposuction for his patients. He will spend time to understand your goals during your initial consultation and examination thoroughly and discuss your options and his suggested surgical plan for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who is the right candidate for Liposuction?

Those near their ideal weight are the best candidates. It is NOT a weight-loss method, and it is
for stubborn, localized pockets of fat.

  • Is liposuction an Outpatient Procedure?

Liposuction is typically done as an outpatient procedure. The patient is put under a local anesthetic and sedation, but in some cases, general anesthesia may be required. You can generally go home that day if someone is available to drive you.

  • What Incisions Are Used For Liposuction?

Incisions are made in the areas you wish to be treated, and they usually are small (3-5mm),
which are just large enough to fit the cannula used for the procedure.

  • What Happens During Liposuction?

After the incisions are made, Dr. Sheikh inserts a cannula(a small tube) into the treatment area. The cannula is then attached to a suction device, which is then moved in and out to break up the fat and remove it.
Incisions are then closed with sutures.

  • What Happen After Liposuction?

Following a quick stay in the recovery room, your incisions will be dressed and bandages. You may go home at this point with instructions for after-care, and we will schedule an exam set in a couple of days for your first follow-up appointment.

  • When can I return to work after Liposuction?

Depending on the extent of your operation, most people take 1-2 weeks off from work. In four to six weeks, you may continue to exercise or sports activities. You may need 4-6 weeks off work if your occupation is physically demanding.

  • What Postoperative Symptoms Can I expect after Liposuction?

For a few weeks, your recovery will include some bruising, numbness, and pain. You can take prescription or non-prescription painkillers to relieve you through this stage. It is necessary you wear a compression garment for a time to promote healing in most areas of the body. Many may wear a layer of foam inside this garment to assist in achieving a smoother postoperative outcome. Swelling does take longer to resolve, gradually improving over a few months. Some sutures are removed in about a week.

  • Are there Scars after Liposuction?

There are scars following liposuction, but Dr. Sheikh will strive to place them in discrete areas
whenever possible. Incisions for liposuction are regularly small, and the scars will fade and become less noticeable in the months after your surgery. You will also be provided with strategies for healing the scars as soon as possible.
